A message from AMD Chairman, President and CEO Hector Ruiz
As a child growing up in Mexico, I became aware at an early age of the importance of education. As I have learned and developed in my career, I have discovered that perhaps no force can have a greater impact on promoting education than technology.
The technology industry has reached a crossroads which may affect its ability to truly empower people's lives on a global basis. For the past 30 years, the focus has been on creating faster, more powerful, more efficient systems. However, in an increasingly connected world, our ability to effect positive change will no longer be just a result of new technology. Instead it will depend on our capacity to place technology into the hands of a far greater percentage of the world's citizens.
What should that percentage be? At AMD, we have set a bold and far-reaching goal: to empower 50 percent of the world's population with affordable access to the Internet by 2015. Currently, approximately 10 percent of the world's population has Internet access. While some might view this as impossible, I contend that this endeavor is not only possible, it is perhaps the most important transformational event we will experience in our lifetime. But I contend that it will require a new approach based on a few simple principles from prior lessons learned.

Our “50x15” initiative is more than just about doing good for the world. It is designed to have a more sustaining effect — to enable economic opportunities and reinvestment within high-growth markets — particularly in local manufacturing and distribution. This approach is built upon incentives and strategies that are not just about goodwill but also about good business.
Looking Forward to the Future,
Hector Ruiz |
