OnNow Power Management

With Magic Packet™ technology, AMD pioneered power management for networked PCs. Building on this foundation, AMD has co-authored the OnNow power management reference specification for networking devices, furthering our leadership position in this industry initiative.

The OnNow design initiative is a comprehensive, system-wide approach to system and device power control. OnNow is a term for a PC that is always on but appears off and responds immediately to user or other requests.

The OnNow design initiative involves changes being made to hardware, device drivers, operating systems and applications, and also relies on the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) and PCI Bus Power Management Specifications. OnNow will initially be supported in both Microsoft Windows 98 and Windows NT operating systems. More information on OnNow and ACPI can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/tech/onnow/default.mspx.

AMD currently supports OnNow, ACPI, and PCI Bus power management with the new PCnet-FAST+ and PCnet FAST III 10/100 Ethernet controllers. These controllers fully comply with the AMD co-authored OnNow Network Device Class Power Management Specification (PDF 46K), which includes AMD's patented Magic Packet technology for remote PC wake-up and power-on. This document also specifies various device power management states and additional system and network events that will wake-up the PC. These highly integrated, low power 3.3 Volt devices are ideally suited for PC98, PC99 and Wired for Management systems requiring advanced power management systems requiring advanced power management, whether implemented on the motherboard or a network interface card (NIC).
