To Our Stakeholders,
Since its inception, the
information technology (IT) industry has undergone
spectacular growth and has fueled the greatest
productivity gains the world has ever seen. Our industry
has matured; and we must now re-orient our focus
accordingly. The IT industry has proven it has a brain;
now it is time to show the world it has a heart.
Our most recent Corporate Responsibility Report
addresses AMD’s worldwide operations for 2005 and
presents our progress as a responsible corporate
citizen. It illuminates three key strategic areas in
which we can proactively and positively influence the
practice and impact of business: management of social
and environmental risks and opportunities in our supply
chain; a commitment to the efficient use of energy in
our products and operations; and introducing technology
to underserved markets that enables affordable Internet
access to 50 percent of the world’s population by
2015.
We embrace the electronics industry initiative to
promote accountability for social and environmental
issues throughout our supply chain. We view supply chain
responsibility as an ongoing process to drive
improvements in our suppliers’ practices, where
necessary, thus developing sound global markets.
Innovative solutions are needed to help ease the
impact of our industry on the environment and to help
make the world a better place to live. Our environmental
stewardship extends from investments in environmental
controls and resource conservation measures at our
facilities to the development of energy efficient
products for the communications and computing
industries. Our use of renewable energy in Austin and
cogeneration technology in Dresden and server products
that lead the industry in performance per watt are
testament to our continuing commitment. Finally,
technology has the ability to inspire, connect, and lead
people if it is made truly accessible. Our 50x15
initiative to provide 50 percent of the world’s
population with affordable Internet access by the year
2015 is a bold undertaking which we cannot accomplish
alone. That is why we have partnered with Lenovo and
Dawning in China, for example, to provide computers in
schools enabling millions of students Internet access.
Technology may be the next great leveler, and 50x15 is
the kind of initiative with the power to change
socio-economic divides.
The time has come for new leaders to emerge, to
provide innovative technology that enables social and
economic development based on responsible business and
environmental principles. Unyielding integrity earns
trust, and we must earn the trust of our stakeholders to
be a new leader.
As we move through 2006 and beyond, it is our values,
like integrity, that guide our path toward leadership.
